There is a need for proactive recruitment campaigns to target women into non-traditional trades:

It is necessary to actively recruit women in order to challenge female perceptions of what they can do and stereotypes of non-traditional trades that have been reinforced in the home, school and world of work.

Recommendations

We have the women who agreed to participate in this pilot scheme, to thank for the lessons learned from this project. Below is a summary of the key findings and recommendations surmised from Helios Project learning:

  1. Government should set targets for increased female participation in non-traditional vocational training
  2. There is a need for proactive recruitment campaigns to target women into non-traditional trades
  3. Unbiased careers guidance is invaluable when attempting to promote women into non-traditional sectors
  4. Schools and training providers should utilise Taster Sessions as a method of challenging gender stereotypes
  5. An increase in the number of female tutors within training environments is needed to break down stereotypes and encourage female participation in training
