Background
The Helios project was funded by the Department for Employment & Learning and the European Social Fund’s EQUAL Initiative, which aims to tackle inequality and discrimination in the workplace across Europe.
The project grew out of the shared concerns of a group of local community organisations about the number of women training for, or employed in construction trades, both in the North West and throughout Northern Ireland.
Conscious of government efforts to increase the number of women entering construction trades, the Helios Development Partnership led by Triax Taskforce, sought to promote and contribute to that effort.
Through their supported two year training programme, the Helios project offered women the opportunity to explore occupations not traditionally taken up by females and to challenge barriers to their equal participation within gender segregated jobs.
